Professor Gerson's primary areas of interest include the sociology of gender, work, identities, and contemporary social theory. Her book, At Home and In the Office, a study of home-based clerical workers is forthcoming.  She has also published several articles and chapters on home-based labor and gender theory. She is co-authoring a book on the development of the concept of "gender." Stemming in part from her interests in feminist theories of identity, recently she has initiated an interdisciplinary study of German Jewish immigrant identities, which focuses on identity practices among German Jews who settled in New York City between 1933 and 1945. She is past chair of the American Sociological Association's Section on the Sociology of Sex and Gender, and the Committee on the Status of Women. Professor Gerson teaches graduate courses in sociology of gender and feminist theories.
