Disasters

Professor Karen A. Cerulo has written several articles and a book (Never Saw It Coming: Cultural Challenges to Envisioning the Worst) addressing the failure to anticipate worst cases.  She studies the tendency – especially among Americans – to exaggerate the best and disregard the worst, and she explores the social and cultural reasons behind this phenomenon.  She can comments on this trend as it occurs in intimate relationships, life transitions, leisure and workplace settings, organizations and bureaucracies, and with regard to large-scale disasters.
