Professor Thomas Rudel studies environmental sociology and economic sociology. He studies the social changes that drive landscape transformations in both temperate and tropical places in the world.  In recent years his work has focused on deforestation, forest recovery, and sprawl in different places.  He has published widely on land use planning, housing and energy use in the United States and tropical deforestation in Latin America.
