Professor Allan V. Horwitz is the author of a number of books and many articles on the reasons behind growing rates of mental illness in recent years in the U.S. He is particularly interested in the effects of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) of the American Psychiatric Association on definitions of mental illness. He has also done work on the growing use of psychotropic medications in society.
