Professor and Graduate Director of Sociology, his scholarly interests include organizational, political and environmental sociology, including the sociology of biodiversity conservation and climate change.  Current projects include articulating Karl Polanyi’s environmental sociology and environmentalisms built upon Polanyian thinking; investigating sustainable lifestyles in comparative context; exploring critically civil society space at a variety of scales affected by on-going economic, social, and environmental transformations; comparing national-level commitments to adaptation and/or mitigation of greenhouse gases related to concerns over climate change; and finally evolving field research in Belize, Central America where he investigates state-civil society relationships and tensions around nature protection efforts under new state emphases of mega-tourism and oil development, along with growing worries over climate change. Before arriving at Rutgers, Brechin held positions at Princeton, Michigan, Illinois, and Syracuse. He earned his graduate degrees from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
