Carole A. Shea, PhD, RN, FAAN is a nurse educator with more than 30 years of experience in teaching, program development and academic administration. She has a bachelor’s degree in nursing from William Paterson College, with a Master’s degree in psychiatric nursing and a PhD in Sociology from Rutgers University. Her doctoral study on how inner-city residents cope with rheumatoid arthritis was supported by a fellowship from the Arthritis Foundation. Dr. Shea was recruited in 2000 from Northeastern University in Boston, to become the Director of the School of Nursing at California State University Dominguez Hills. This nursing program is one of the largest nursing programs in the state and the only state-funded program offering its programs entirely online as well as through classroom-based distance education. Dr. Shea is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and a member of Sigma Theta Tau International and Phi Kappa Phi, and a designated “Nurse Scientist” with the California Southern Region of Kaiser Permanente. She is a former president of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association, and has served on the Board of the Association of California Nurse Leaders and the Board of the California Association of Colleges of Nursing. She has many publications, including the award-winning book, Advanced Practice Nursing in Psychiatric and Mental Health Care (1999). She is a frequent consultant and speaker on topics such as community-based health professions education, distance learning, and academic organizational change. Carole is a co-owner of CH. Bellatak’s My Funny Valentine, aka “Vallee”, who is the #1 Havanese show dog in America for 2009.
