Professor Stephen Hansell studies medical sociology, the social psychology of illness behavior and social support networks.  Current projects focus on the effects of managed care on treatment outcomes for mentally ill children and adolescents.

Professor Joanna Kempner studies the politics of science and medicine. She has particular expertise in three areas: 1) how political controversies shape and sometimes suppress scientific knowledge, 2) how cultural shapes how we think about and treat health and illness and 3) the ways in which men and women receive different sorts of treatment from our health system.  She has written editorials and provided media interviews on a number of topics, including the political suppression of science and the ethics of pharmaceutical advertising.
