Since 2001, I’ve been the chairperson of the sociology department at the College of Saint Elizabeth in Morristown, NJ – a warm and vibrant community of learning, a lovely and stimulating place to work. My research focuses on the impact of modern communication technologies on social units both small and large: relationships, communities, whole societies. I’ve published two books on the topic, both with State University of New York Press – Connecting: How We Form Social Bonds and Communities in the Internet Age (2002) and Portable Communities: The Social Dynamics of Online and Mobile Connectedness (2008). Of my published articles, my current favorite is for the tech-savvy, though not necessarily academic, audience of the online magazine Vodafone Receiver; you can check it out here I also enjoy giving talks and presentations to all kinds of audiences – classes, conferences, civic groups -- I keynoted the 2010 conference of the New Jersey Communication Association, which was lots of fun. Next up, I’m co-editing an anthology on public sociology featuring articles from the journal Humanity and Society, which is the journal of the Association for Humanist Sociology. But mostly right now I am spending as much time as possible with my husband (Rutgers women’s soccer coach Glenn Crooks) and my two children before my oldest heads to college! It is always a blast running into RU Sociology alums in academic (and non-academic) circles – this happens all the time! – and I would be happy to connect with more of you.
