Stephen Magura, Ph.D., C.S.W., is the Research Director of Behavioral Studies and former Director of The Evaluation Center, Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, Michigan. He is the former Acting Executive Director and Director of Science and Research at National Development and Research Institutes, New York City. He has been the Principal Investigator of 23 studies since 1987 sponsored by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism and the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. He has designed and directed drug dependency clinical trials, treatment evaluation studies, health services research, social epidemiology studies, HIV prevention research and policy analyses. He has 200+ peer-reviewed publications and authored or edited several books and special journal issues, including Outcome Measures for Child Welfare Services (Child Welfare League of America), Experimental Therapeutics in Addiction Medicine (Haworth Press); a special issue of Health and Social Work on “Chemical Dependency;” special issues of Substance Use and Misuse on “Program Quality in Substance Dependency Treatment” and “Contemporary Vocational Rehabilitation for Substance Users;” and a special issue of Evaluation and Program Planning on “Evidence-based Program Registers in Behavioral Health.” He is currently the Chief Editor of Substance Use and Misuse and a Consulting Editor for Health and Social Work.
