Ashley Hollingshead is a doctoral student at Rutgers University-New Brunswick. Her research engages theoretical themes and methodological insights from urban geography, urban and cultural sociology, gender theory, and African American studies to investigate how urban development informs race and gendered inequity for Black women urban residents. She employs qualitative methods to explore urban neighborhood design and the consequences for Black women's experiences with safety in urban landscapes. Her masters' theses entitled, "'She was the Best Mother': Controlling Images in Newspaper Constructions of State-Sanctioned Police Violence against Black Women and Men", utilized a content analysis to explore how mainstream media prevents resonance of state-sanctioned violence against Black women in urban landscapes. Her dissertation will explore how new surveillance technologies inform how Black women perceive their sense of safety in urban landscapes.
