Mary Ellen Stitt is an assistant professor in the Department of Sociology at Rutgers University - New Brunswick. She is a sociologist of punishment and mental health and author of Trial by Treatment: Punishing Illness in an Age of Criminal Legal Reform (University of Chicago Press, 2025). Her work uses ethnographic and mixed methods to investigate the state’s governance of illness and substance use, institutional change, and the production of social inequality.
